When Yankee Bill and I got married, we did the whole "registering for gifts" thing. It was a bit intimidating to pick out all the different items, but I specifically remember choosing a stainless steel cookware set because I figured it would last me my entire married life without wearing out.

About 4 years later, Yankee Bill gave me a new set of pots. They were red and non stick. Pretty. So I packed away my stainless (marking the box with a big "DO NOT THROW OUT" in magic marker, just in case) and started using my gift. After all, I wanted hubs to see that I liked his present 🙂

Of course over time the non stick coating started to break and peel, causing me to throw out a few of the pots. I started to read about concerns various folks had with the non stick substances. I was just about to head up to the barn attic to locate my old stainless when Walmart contacted me about reviewing the new line of Better Homes and Garden stainless steel cookware they are now carrying.

It was providence! Somehow I have been blessed with getting these types of review opportunities just when I need them. Or maybe it is the fact that I refuse the others because I don't need them. Whatever.

I was like a kid waiting for Christmas waiting for my pots to arrive. They were so pretty and shiny coming out of the box!

I received the Better Homes and Gardens 10-Piece Tri-Ply Clad 18/10 Stainless-Steel Cookware Set, which includes the 6qt covered Dutch oven with lid, 3qt covered sauce pan with lid, 1.5qt covered sauce pan with lid, 3 qt covered deep skillet with lid, 10″ skillet and 8″ skillet. The set retails for $149 at Walmart.

They looked splendid-but then again most things do when they are new. The question is, how did they cook?

I have a glass top cookstove. Since I'm not much on housework (really-I'm not just being modest here) I love that it is so easy to clean a glass top. I also love that I can use the stove top for extra counterspace when I'm not cooking. But let's face it-glass tops just don't heat up as quickly or evenly as a gas or even electric range.

I was pleasantly surprised by the stainless steel's performance on my stove. When I boiled a pot of water, you could see by the pattern of the bubbles that there was a much more even distribution of heat than in my old non stick pans.

I did have to relearn some old tricks-letting the pan heat up and using a quick brush of oil (I haven't used nonstick spray in years) to keep food from sticking, scrubbing pots down with steel wool or scouring powder etc.

All in all I thought this was a very nice set of pans. The sizes are good (although I'd have liked a big stock pot for soups etc) and will cover the needs of any basic cook. The construction is strong and should last many years with minimal care. It's definitely of the "buy once and then you don't have to buy again" variety.

I would personally recommend this to any friend looking for a good, basic, go to set of pots & pans.
